Lima (sea level)The last two days we toured Lima, the capital of Peru and a city of 9 million people. The Lima CathedralThe intricate architecture. Francisco Pizarro, the Spaniard who brutally crushed and destroyed the Inca's "for God and Country" has his own wing inside the Lima Cathedral. What a swell guy! After demolishing the Inca center, he quickly returned to the coast to found Lima as the new center of the South American Spanish empire.
And his thirteen compadres, otherwise known to the Inca/Quechua people
as the co-conspirators. His Spanish coat of arms? The Prince of Peace... and a Piece of ... er ... Pizarro.
The cathedral contained numerous extremely large, impressive, religious
pieces of art.
While the cathedral's high arches and numerous columns are amazing, one
can imagine why the cathedral was nearly destroyed by earthquakes, both
in 1687 & 1746.
The first Archbishop of Lima sits on the wall overlooking the present
Archbishop's desk.
Crosses and rings worn by the Archbishops. A military vehicle stands guard next to the Presidential Palace. Masami couldn't help but sneak some ice cream at McDonald's. This impressive statue has the liberator San Martin on horseback. The entrance to the soccer-themed bar El Estadio Futbol Club displays the first of a number of life-size wax figures of famous futbolistas.
